Handmade Ornamental Tiles
Dreadnought supply a wide range of handmade ornamental clay roof tiles, club fishtail, spade and arrowhead in all the Dreadnought tile colours.
Ornamental tiles were common in Victorian architecture and were used to add interest to large expanses of roof or vertical cladding.
In the main they are used either in a series of bands or in diamond shapes. Experience has shown that Ornamental tiles look best, tiled as an odd number of courses i.e. 3 or 5. Whilst Ornamental tiles and Plain tiles in the same colour provide a subtle feature, a more striking contrast can be obtained if the Ornamental tiles are shown in different colours.
We have seen more contemporary projects recently that feature our ornamental tiles. Arrowhead tiles in particular lend themselves well to contemporary schemes as they create a geometric hexagonal pattern when laid.
